Elephants in Kenya Die After Eating Poisoned Tomatoes
Fifteen elephants in southern Kenya died after eating tomatoes sprayed with a pesticide containing cyanide.
Many elephants live in the Amboseli ecosystem in southern Kenya. This area is near Amboseli National Park. The land is shared with Tanzania. More than 2,000 elephants live there now. Farmers also grow food on the land near the park. Elephants sometimes walk into farms. They look for food and water there.
In June and July 2026, fifteen elephants died. Officials found the dead animals outside the park. The Kenya Wildlife Service checked the bodies. Tests found poison in the samples. The poison is called cyanide. Officials think the elephants ate tomatoes. The tomatoes had pesticide on them. Farmers use pesticide to kill bad insects.
Ten elephants were sick before they died. They could not move their legs. They died in two days. Five elephants were already dead when people found them. Officials say people did not kill them on purpose. They say the poison is not dangerous for humans now.
This is a very sad event for the region. It is the first time in many years that so many elephants died together. The Amboseli Trust for Elephants watches the animals. They want to keep the elephants safe. This story shows a problem between farms and wildlife areas. People need to find a way to help both farmers and elephants. Everyone wants the animals to live and be healthy.
